Product manager questions

Make the user problem and product tradeoff concrete

A strong product answer defines an audience and outcome before features. Frameworks help with coverage, but the important work is choosing, explaining, and testing a point of view.

Representative questions

Time-box clarification, then make reasonable assumptions explicit.

  • Choose a workflow you use often. What user problem would you address first and why?
  • A core metric fell after launch. How would you investigate?
  • How would you prioritize requests from a major customer against a broader need?
  • Tell me about a product decision you influenced without authority.
  • Define success and guardrails for a new recommendation feature.

Review your answer

Did you choose a user rather than say ‘everyone’? Did the solution follow from the problem? Are the metrics sensitive to the intended outcome and possible harm?
